Drain Cleaning Cost for a Sewer Line
Published sewer line costs (2026)
| Method | Cost per foot | Published job total | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional dig & replace | $50–$250 | $7,500–$30,000 | Severe damage, wrong slope or bellies, or easy open access |
| Trenchless pipe bursting | $150–$190 | $4,000–$20,000 | Pipe collapsed or badly deteriorated; full replacement needed |
| Trenchless pipe lining (CIPP) | $135–$150 | $4,000–$20,000 | Pipe mostly intact with cracks, leaks or moderate roots |
A published trenchless total for a 40–60 foot job is $4,000–$15,000. Sources survey different jobs, so their totals do not always match per-foot math. The calculator uses per-foot rates plus the add-ons you select.
If a plumber says the sewer is clogged, the first visit is usually drain cleaning: a cable (a snake) or a hydro jet. That visit opens the pipe. It doesn't replace it. Full replacement prices live on the sewer line replacement cost page. The ranges below are for comparing a snake, a jet, and the point where another cleaning is throwing money away.
A slow kitchen sink is often a local clog. Several toilets and showers backing up at once usually means the lateral, the line from the house to the city main. The numbers below are for that line.
Drain cleaning cost
| Job | Published range | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|
| Snaking | $150–$500 | A cable punched through the clog |
| Basic sewer snaking | $200–$500 | Same work; HomeGuide's sewer-line wording |
| Hydro jetting | $250–$800 | High-pressure water along the wall |
| Hydro jetting to clear a line | $600–$1,400 | Same method, quoted as a full clear |
| Main-line clog | $200–$600 | Angi; about $380 sits in the middle of that range |
| Root removal | $100–$600 | Roots cut; the joint that let them in is still there |
HomeGuide published the snake and jet ranges on December 22, 2025. Angi published the main-line clog range on August 3, 2026. Ask the company which method is in the fee. A quote that only says "drain cleaning" could be either row.
For the jet itself, including when it is the wrong tool, see hydro jetting cost.
When cleaning stops helping
If the same toilets gurgle a week later, the clog was a symptom. A crack, a sag, or a collapsed section will catch paper again. Drain unclogging doesn't close that damage. Sewer repair, in the sense of a joint, a liner, or a new pipe, is a different bill.
Before you book a second truck, pay $100–$500 for a sewer camera inspection. Film it if more than one fixture is slow, if you smell sewage, or if a strip of yard over the line stays wet. The warning signs are listed under signs of sewer line damage.
A cracked-pipe spot repair is $600–$1,050 in Angi's table. Lining a pipe that is still round runs $135–$150 per foot. Those figures, and the repair-versus-replace choice, are on sewer line repair cost.
Worked example
Say a suburban house pays $150–$500 to snake the line, and the backup returns in a week. The camera then shows 25 feet of cracked pipe that is still round enough to line.
Pipe work is 25 × $135–$150, which is $3,375–$3,750. Add a camera and a permit ($200–$1,500) and the rounded lining estimate is $3,600–$5,300.
You still paid for the snake. That fee doesn't reduce the lining total. If the video had shown a collapse, skip lining and get bursting or dig numbers instead.
Before you pay for another cleaning
- Get "snake" or "hydro jet" in writing before the truck leaves the shop.
- Don't pay for a second cleaning until you have the camera file.
- Tell the plumber about every slow fixture, including the ones that haven't overflowed yet.
- If the video shows one bad joint, ask for a spot-repair price next to the cleaning price.
- Keep the recording. The next company should not charge you to discover the same crack.
Common questions
How much does drain cleaning cost?
On a sewer line, HomeGuide puts snaking at $150–$500 and hydro jetting at $250–$800. Angi puts a main-line clog at $200–$600, with about $380 in the middle. A clogged sink inside the house is cheaper than those sewer figures.
Is drain unclogging the same as sewer repair?
No. Unclogging opens the pipe. Repair means a joint, a liner, or a new pipe. Cleaning won't close a crack. If more than one fixture is slow, treat it as a lateral problem and get a camera instead of another snake.
When should I skip another drain cleaning service visit?
Skip it if the same fixtures slow down again, if you smell sewage, or if the yard stays wet over the line. A sewer camera inspection is $100–$500 and will show whether you have a clog or a failed pipe.
Does drain cleaning include hydro jetting?
Only if the quote says so. A snake punches a hole. A jet washes the wall. Ask which method is in the fee before the truck arrives.
